Victor, age 96, passed away at his home in Saint George. He was the son of Emiel and Marie (Van Heicke) Claeys. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was on the USS California during the attack on Pearl Harbor but was able to swim to shore. He was mistakenly reported as killed in action, and funeral services were held in his honor. Two weeks later his family received word that he was alive and well and would be returning home soon. He married Mary Deibler on June 4, 1968. Survivors include his wife, his children, Margie Lakin, Lonnie Lakin, Amy Smith McLouth, Teresa Edmunds, Jim Claeys, Janice Haas, and Jerry Claeys, 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Francis Claeys. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Morris, August, Gustoff, Lawrence, and Margaret. Burial was in Saint George Cemetery.
