Apiognomonia errabunda

Oak anthracnose

Description

Typical symptoms of the infection are brown spots along the main vein of the leaf blade. Another symptom are brown spots on the leaf blade basis and most rarely occurs the blackening of leaf stems. The fungus is an endophyte living in the green parts of leaves and not causing any damage. In case of the weakening of leaves or the weakening of whole trees e.g. by drought, gall-creating insects or other fungi, there occurs a change in a way of fungus life and it becomes a pathogen. It results in the leaf necrosis, however, by this self-destructing defence mechanism it prevents from  the forming of insect galls.
