Dothichiza populea

Dothichiza canker

Description

In spring, infection enters through buds, in autumn through leaf scars and during the entire year through lenticels and bark wounds. Trees are more susceptible to infection at the end of the growing season and during warmer days in winter. Firstly, bark necroses are darker and sunk. In spring, fruiting bodies like black pinheads are formed on dead bark. After death of cambium bark cracks are created by subsequent growth. The conidial stage is known as Dothichiza populea. Common cultivated pyramidal forms of poplars planted in the urban environment are often susceptible to the infection.
