CANCER EMERGENCY: Help save my friend from Gaza

My name is Cédric Pontet. I live in Luxembourg and I have decided to open this fundraiser in the name of Fuad N. A. Aliyan, a very close friend, and his family who are currently stranded in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip in Palestine. Fuad is Palestinian. Before, he lived in Gaza City with his wife Rima and two children Omar (12) and Naef (9). Since Israel started bombing Gaza, they have been forced to leave their home, like a majority of Palestinians, to flee the bombing. We don't have many photos and we manage to communicate with them only once a month. But you can see the children on this profile.

At the beginning of the bombing in early October, they remained in Gaza City. But as the intensity of the bombing increased, they decided to move south, where the Israeli army said they would not send bombs. There, they stayed with their cousins. They learned during the truce in November 2023 that their home in Gaza City had been destroyed by the bombs, along with the small shop that was their only source of income. They have lost everything.

After the truce, the army began to bomb the south as well. Fleeing the bombs again, they eventually took refuge in Rafah, where they currently live in a 50 square meters apartment for 30 people, which costs them more than $1,000 a month. They have virtually no water and nothing to eat. Sanitary conditions are catastrophic and diseases are beginning to spread. They have nowhere else to go, as Egypt refuses to open its border to the south. If Israel launches a ground attack in Rafah, which goes against all the rules of international and humanitarian law, it will be a real massacre.

Fuad used to be a doctor. Because of his profession, he has taken an oath not to hurt anyone. His children are as innocent as any child of that age can be. And yet, they have already experienced more horrors than the majority of people will ever see in their entire lives. Fuad can no longer practice his profession as a doctor because he has been suffering from colon cancer for many years now. He is bravely fighting for his survival and that of his family, but he needs treatment that is currently inaccessible to him. He is diabetic and because of the lack of proper treatment, he has already lost several toes. He will not be able to hold on much longer given the precarious survival conditions in Rafah. We all live in unbearable fear that the Israeli army's attacks on Rafah will escalate.

For all of these reasons, my family and I have decided to get them out of Gaza. There are travel agencies in Egypt who, for large sums of money, allow Palestinians to leave Rafah and fund shelter in Egypt. If we can get his family out to Egypt, we hope that Fuad will be able to get the medical care he needs for his cancer and diabetes, and the minimum dignity they all deserve.

At the moment, we don't have a clear idea of what it will cost. The information we get is very confusing and difficult to obtain. We have heard about a minimum of €10,000 per person to get out of Rafah, which is likely to increase. Then there is the cost of accommodation and medical care. So we've set a goal for this fundraiser at €40,000.

Depuis qu'Israël a commencé à bombarder Gaza, ils ont été forcés de quitter leur foyer, comme une majorité de Palestiniens, pour fuir les bombardements. Nous n'avons pas beaucoup de photos, et nous n'arrivons à communique avec eux qu'une fois par mois, mais vous pouvez voir une photo des enfants sur ce profil.

Au début des bombardements début Octobre, ils sont restés à Gaza City. Mais comme l'intensité des bombardement augmentait, ils sont partis vers le sud qui, selon l'armée israélienne, ne devait pas être bombardé. Là, ils ont été accueilli chez des cousins. Ils ont appris pendant la trêve de Novembre 2023 que leur logement à Gaza City avait été détruit par les bombes, au même titre que le petit magasin qui constituait leur unique source de revenus. Ils ont tout perdu.

Après la trêve, l'armée a commencé à bombarder le sud également. Fuyant de nouveau les bombes, ils ont finalement été obligés de se réfugier à Rafah, où ils vivent actuellement à 30 dans un appartement de 50 m², qu'ils paient plus de $1000 par mois. lls n'ont pratiquement pas d'eau et rien à manger. Les conditions sanitaires sont catastrophiques et les maladies commencent à se rependre. Ils n'ont plus nulle part d'autre où aller, car l'Egypte refuse d'ouvrir sa frontière au sud. Si Israël lance une attaque terrestre d'envergure à Rafah, ce qui va à l'encontre de toutes les règles du doit international et humanitaire, ce sera un véritable massacre.

Fuad était médecin. De part sa profession, il a prêté serrement de ne faire de mal à personne. Ses enfant sont aussi innocents que peuvent l'être n'importe quels enfants de cet âge. Et pourtant, ils ont déjà vécu plus d'horreurs que la majorité des gens n'en verront au cours de leur vie entière. Fuad ne peux plus exercer sa profession de médecin car il est atteint depuis maintenant de nombreuses années d'un cancer du colon. Il lutte courageusement pour sa survie et celle de sa famille, mais il a besoin de traitements qui lui sont pour l'instant inaccessibles. Il est diabétique et à cause du manque de traitement, il a déjà perdu plusieurs orteils. Il ne pourra pas tenir encore très longtemps vues les conditions de survie précaires à Rafah. Nous vivons tous dans le peur insoutenable que les attaques de l'armée israélienne sur Rafah s'amplifient.

Pour toutes ces raisons, ma famille et moi avons décidé de les faire sortir de Gaza. Il existe en Egypte des agences de voyages qui, moyennant des sommes d'argent importantes, permettent à des Palestiniens de sortir de Rafah et d'être hébergés en Egypte. Si nous parvenons à faire sortir sa famille en Egypte, nous espérons que Fuad pourra y bénéficier des soins médicaux dont il a besoin pour son cancer et son diabète, et du minimum de dignité qu'ils méritent tous les quatre.

A l'heure actuelle, nous n'avons pas d'idée précise de ce que cela va coûter. Les informations sont très confuses et difficiles à obtenir. Nous avons entendu parlé d'un minimum de 10 000 € par personne pour sortir de Rafah, et ça risque d'augmenter. Il faut ensuite compter le prix de l'hébergement et des soins médicaux. Nous avons donc fixé un objectif pour cette cagnotte à 40 000 €.
