DCI Craig Gillard #11

The Body in the Shadows

Rate this book
For DCI Gillard, sometimes old sins cast long shadows…

Under a motorway flyover lies the body of a young man. Days earlier, he had been involved in an altercation with DCI Craig Gillard’s pregnant partner Sam. Now he’s dead...

Meanwhile, something is brewing in the criminal underworld. Whispers of a big job have reached the Met’s Flying Squad. Something is going to be stolen, and soon. Something worth £500m.

But what? And where? And how does it relate to the body under the overpass? It should be a simple case: stop the burglary, crack the gang, find the murderer – but for Gillard, once again it’s personal…

The Body in the Shadows is the eleventh book in the consistently clever DCI Craig Gillard police procedural series, about a hardworking middle-aged detective in Surrey, England. I’ve read all of these in order, but they do stand alone as mysteries, although I do enjoy the recurring support characters in this series, and the little updates into their lives. What I like best about this series is the diversity of the crimes that Gillard investigates, which means they are never formulaic - yes, there’s a murder, but it’s not the main mystery - and the reveal here’s a doozy!

Gillard’s wife Sam is doing some quiet Christmas shopping, when she spots a pickpocketer, and despite being six months pregnant, decides to intervene - with nearly disastrous consequences. The young man escapes, but a week later is found dead in a canal. Meanwhile the Met are investigating rumours of a huge heist planned for the week before Christmas - and one of Gillard’s old informants has some key information about it. The police teams know who the suspects are, but not what they’re up to - how can they prevent the crime of the century when they don’t know what it will be?

I’m running out of new ways to praise this excellent series! I finished this in less than a day, the pace and plotting were perfect, and I didn’t guess what was going on until the big reveal. Gillard does a lot of work that you might expect to be covered by a lower ranked detective, but this is explainable by the secrecy required by the magnitude of the suspected plot. There are lots of characters to keep up with but it never got confusing and all the loose threads were neatly unravelled by the end. Recommended to fans of intelligent British crime fiction which isn’t too gory or violent. 4.5 rounded up.
Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo. I am posting this honest review voluntarily.

Sadly another less than average book that despite being short and having a good start, turned out to be dragged and boring.

Finally, the last book in this series. I started with the first one in June, and finished the 12th one in the series recently for NG.
This one was not very exciting or interesting. It was a lot of talk about a bunch of crooks and I was getting a bit tired reading about them. The opening scene was great and the crime was interesting, but I couldn't care less about the way Craig and his colleagues solved it.

Life for DCI Craig Gillard and wife Sam is exciting with their first baby due in the spring. Before that though is Christmas and Sam has been enjoying a day of shopping when she witnesses a crime which leaves her traumatised and scared. A few days later Craig is dismayed to discover a personal link to a murder victim which leaves him suddenly on the sidelines of his own investigation.

Whispers are reaching him however of a big job due to be undertaken before everything shuts down for the festive season and soon Craig finds himself involved in a cat and mouse chase as he tries to discover not only what's about to happen but also who's involved. With the stakes apparently sky high the prospect of failure can't be considered but have they got everything in hand or have the conflicting rumours blindsided them all?

Number eleven in the brilliant DCI Craig Gillard series of books is not one to read if you're tired! It's compelling from the start and as everything becomes clearer to those involved a tad complicated as well! All is explained within the storyline and having slowed my pace a little I was able to follow everything quite easily and finishedit in two sittings. Once again Craig's private life impacts on his job and I was concerned by the ending which I am convinced was actually a subtle cliffhanger because this author doesn't do low key anything!

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it and the whole series very highly.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Canelo for approving me for an ARC of this book. I have been a long-standing fan of the series and always look forward to the latest instalment.

💥Nick Louth isn’t someone who hangs about. We are immediately thrown into the action with Craig Gillard’s partner, Sam, at the centre of an attack. From here the action just kept coming!

🕵🏻It was great to be back in the folds of the team. As always the investigation took many twists and turns, the pacing was spot on and the revelations were timed brilliantly!

🚓With a whole cast of shady suspects I didn’t know how everything would wrap up, but Nick Louth threw a few surprises in and I hadn’t guessed what the heist was about at all.

⭐This was another great addition to the series. I’m sad to see the series is going to draw to a close with the next instalment but I’m excited to see what the final book brings.

Wow, I thought this was one absorbing and very riveting read! I was drawn into the story right from the first page which immediately took me into a very full on, action packed and thrilling read. DCI Gillard is told by an old informant that a big job is happening soon although where, when and the target are unknown. At the same time he and his team also investigate a suspicious death - is it murder? I loved the authors writing style, it is engaging and I thought the story flowed really well. There are so many story threads here along with quite a few characters so initially it took a while to become familiar with them all and to slot into place in my mind. I thought the plot line was well thought out and all to believable in todays world. Gillard finds himself assisting in two separate investigations which may be connected. The last part of the book was a thrilling, page turning read as all the threads begin to tie up nicely along with some very unexpected twists that floored me! Overall a very VERY good read and in my opinion this is the best book so far in series. If you like crime, solid procedurals you will definitely like this book, and I would recommend it. Looking forward to the next book.

As usual in my reviews I will not rehash the plot...

This is the 11th book in the DCI Craig Gillard series, but don't worry too much if you haven't read the previous books - there's enough background information about the characters from the earlier novels for this to work fine as a standalone read.

Having read all the previous novels in this series, I was delighted to receive an ARC of this latest book. I was not disappointed! The plot is quite complicated and has several strands and a large cast of shady characters. The book gets off to a really dramatic start that made me feel even warier next time I visited a shopping mall!

A great twist in the plot shows the importance of being able to "think outside the box" (apologies for the term!)

Recommended if you like twisty police procedurals with great characters. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.

The last of the Gillard books for now and it's a pretty good one. Nick Louth has been pretty good at coming up with out of the box plots and this is one of them. Spoilers ahead.

The book starts off with Sam (Gillard's wife) being attacked in a shopping mall while trying to record a pair of shoplifters. She almost gets killed but the shoplifters (a man and a woman) escape.

Meanwhile the cops are hearing from different sources that a big heist of up to £500M is being planned. They squeeze their CIs to try and get more info. Collating info from all sources seem to indicate that it's a heist in central London involving a priceless da Vinci painting (Salvator Mundi) owned by the Saudis and being loaned to the National Gallery. The cops plan their trap.

Part the info is taken from a cellphone from the male shoplifter who has been murdered and tossed into the river. The info here seems to indicate that an old hand named Moses might be part of it. But other sources seem to point their fingers at another old hand named Norris and the two hate each other.

Anyway the date of the heist comes and goes without anything happening and the cops look flat footed and foolish. However something else seems to be happening. Many travelers taking the train have had their credit and debit cards debited the amount of £100 while going through the stiles. This doesn't seem to be an innocent error. In fact, after looking into it, this is the "heist" that the criminals have been talking about. It's an electronic heist instead of an old fashioned smash and grab.

The gang that the cops have been watching all suddenly disappear. But not quick enough. Unfortunately Britain is an island and one by one, they are all caught, either at the border or while they're trying to flee.

While the plot is good I find a big plot hole. One is why the gang even has to lay a false trail. Ostensibly, it's to point the finger at Moses whom Norris hates. But the trail is fake anyway since they weren't going to rob the museum and all it did was to alert the cops that something was going on. And since the cops were alerted, they were on the trail of the gang immediately. And the main characters that needed to pull this off did not need the police to be sniffing at them. Killing the shoplifter to point the finger only served to bring more attention to the case when the cops linked the two events together.

Finally a couple of small things.
1) Marasova is the feminine form of the Slavic name. Marasov is the masculine form. The father's name would not have been Ionatan Marasova. That's an amateur and easily verifiable mistake.
2) I'm surprised at how they tried to go at Lamb, one of the junior members of the gang. They could have easily told him that with such a big crime and the police brass being skilled at the game of self preservation weren't going to let it go, why get everything pinned on him and be a scrape goat when he was only getting £30k while the rest were getting millions.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. This is certainly different from regular British murder mysteries and I hope Louth will continue to churn out more in the series.

A very good book, read from cover to cover yesterday evening. Craig Gillard is a DCI with a very pregnant wife who works in the police call centre. It's nearly christmas and she is shopping in a mall when she spots a man taking a purse out of an elderly lady's handbag, she takes his picture and he realises she has seen him and legs it. She follows him up an escalator but behind her is a very evil looking girl actually, who seems to be working in tandem with the thief. She gets to the top of the escalator and the thief waves a knife at her and then the girlfriend begins to push her over the top of the wall, Sam clings on and is expecting to die as she could see the shopping mall floor several metres below her, she's thinking of the new life growing inside her and doesn't want to die, and doesn't want her baby to die.

Meanwhile Gillard has been alerted that something very big is going down, something worth millions of pounds, he gets the call about his wife and rushes out. Sam survives but looks like she's gone ten rounds in a boxing ring, the baby is safe too. Then Craig is called to look at a body which has been found in the canal, when it's turned over the man looks exactly like the photo Sam took on her phone of the thief.

It gets a bit complicated from here on, you're trying to work out where the thief and his maniacal girlfriend fit in along with the billion pound heist and a police informer, not to forget the london underground. It does all tie in nicely at the end and I really did enjoy it! Would happily read another by him, even if I still can't understand how Sam survived the fall and why on earth would Craig think he didn't look like a policeman entering a tall blocks in a seedy part of london going to visit his police informer!

Originally posted on my blog Nonstop Reader.

The Body in the Shadows is the 11th procedural thriller featuring DCI Craig Gillard by Nick Louth. Released 19th Jan 2023 by Canelo, it's 287 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats.

This is a very well written procedural with a well established ensemble cast. Despite being the 11th book in the series, the plot is self contained and the necessary character backstories are written in, so it works well enough as a standalone. These are returning characters and their interrelationships have developed over time, so some spoilers are inevitable if read out of order, however.

It's a modern procedural thriller, so there is some on-page violence and rough language. Not egregious and certainly not off-putting, but it's there (i.e., not a cozy mystery). There are 11 books extant at this point. It would make a good choice for a buddy read, or series binge read. All the books are well written and tightly plotted. Fans of Deborah Crombie, Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, and Anne Cleeves (Jimmy Perez books, not necessarily Vera) will find a lot to like here as well.

Four and a half stars.

The Body in the Shadows is one of Nick Louth's best yet! I enjoyed his usual combination of police procedural, personal vignettes, and criminal pov. The book begins with a thrilling segment of Sam Gillard being mugged and almost killed in a mall while Christmas shopping, and this thread is woven into the main mystery. Reading this novel, I participated more than I usually do… I must admit when reading detective novels, I don't always try too hard to guess whodunnit, but the plot turned on the police trying to decipher intelligence alerting them about a supposed huge robbery in London to be staged on the Friday before Christmas. As they worked and the deadline approached, so did I. Intrigued, I didn't fully believe in the two scenarios they were working on and tried to picture what else it could be… but I, like the Flying Squad, was gobsmacked by what it was! I hope real criminals are not that wily. This is a solid entry into the Craig Gillard files with absorbing, disparate plot lines all tied up at the end, and a healthy respect for the reader's intelligence. Also, Sam had better have that baby at the beginning of the next book. That will add complications to Gillard's busy schedule putting criminals away! Finally, a bouquet to the cover designer - the covers are consistent and communicate clearly, yet each is unique.
Thanks to the author, publisher and #netgalley for the chance to read this early and provide a review.

This is the eleventh book in the DCI Craig Gillard series by author Nick Louth. I came into this series at book five but was hooked and have read all the books since. I really should catch up on the first four books. They are good crime novels and would work as standalones. Interesting characters and well thought out plots written well make this series an excellent read for crime fiction lovers.

For DCI Gillard, sometimes old sins cast long shadows…

When the body of a young man is discovered under a motorway flyover DCI Craig Gillard is called in to investigate. The man had a few days earlier been involved in an skirmish DCI Craig Gillard’s pregnant partner Sam and now he’s dead. Meanwhile one of DCI Gillard’s informants has heard rumours that a major crime is about to happen with a value of half a million pounds.

DCI Gillard certainly has his hands full with an ongoing murder and a rumoured robbery to contend with. The problem is the robbery is just a rumour with no hints of what is to be stolen, where and by who.

Fast paced crime novel well plotted and plenty to keep the reader interested making it an enjoyable read.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Canelo for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Having read several books by Nick Louth, including several from this, the DCI Craig Gillard series, I am looking forward to this, the eleventh book in the series.

After a slightly slow build up, suddenly the story had me gripped after a few chapters From then onwards I really enjoyed the fast pace of this carefully crafted police procedural novel.

There are plenty of superb characters in the book, both criminal, incidental and on the police investigation team.

It is difficult to say much about the story lines for fear of spoiling the plot for the reader. I will settle for saying it involves a huge crime by a bunch of old lags. However, everything isn't as clear cut as may at first appear.

The novel is set in London and in it's suburbs. Many of the locations are real, which gives the book a sense of geographical significance, which is enhanced by some interesting fictitious places.

There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot and the tension builds to a dramatic conclusion.

I rate this book as 4 stars. It is an enjoyable crime thriller with which to start the year

Once again I give my thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for an advance copy in exchange for this review.

A completely random attack on his wife will set off events that DCI Craig Gillard never imagined. An accidental murder will bring insight into plans that can have dire consequences. One piece of information can change everything...
But how to prevent all that if the exact time and location are unknown...
Will DCI Craig Gillard and the Metropolitan Police manage to connect these two events and find out everything they need to stop the multi-million dollar theft?

An interesting thriller that will lead you into the world of criminal gangs and police investigations. Old-fashioned ways, reinforced with modern touches, will slowly reveal to you parts of the whole plot, the tension of which gradually grows and culminates with a surprising turn that you honestly won't expect...

An excellent choice for all those who want to investigate together with the characters of the police team and try to find out what is hidden behind the evidence...

What looked to be an assault case gone dangerously close to murder, uncovered a
complicated series of events - murder, then a clever mastery of a seemingly
unbreakable system and millions robbed.

Part of a series, and I will be looking out for them, the story winds its way
through investigations and police procedures which reiterates the fact that most
mysteries are solved by sheer plodding. Witha soupcon of luck and a dash of
intuition.

This was an excellently crafted story with excellent detective work thrown in
It held me so interested that I finished it in one Sunday read. Descriptive especially
inner cities lifestyle (which for me looks so far removed from more genteel London)
was particularly good.

The Body in the Shadows by Nick Louth is the first book I've read by this author. It had a good storyline. I liked DCI Gillard and getting to know the characters.

The story is fairly fast-paced. It starts off with DCI Gillard's wife being attacked at the mall. Later, the man involved is found dead, but the young woman (working with the man) who threatened to kill Gillard's wife is missing and can't be located.

The story is well-written, the action entertaining, and the characters are believable and likable.

I would recommend this book and this author.

The investigation started when Gillard's pregnant wife ran afoul of a pair of malicious petty thieves in a shopping mall. Of the two people involved in the incident with his wife, one is found dead (proved to be murdered) and the other missing. It seems that they were involved with a professional group planning a high-priced heist. And then things get really exciting. This was another great story and it kept me up much too late reading it!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book from Canelo via NetGalley. Thank you!

News has reached DCI Craig Gillard of a huge job that is about to take place in London. When it becomes apparent that this is also on the radar of London’s Metropolitan police force, he shares his information, hoping he will be able to assist in some capacity. Soon, there is word of a potential raid worth £500m, a massive coup if it can be thwarted. But with no exact place or location, will Gillard be able to prevent it from happening? Meanwhile, Gillard has other things on his mind after his pregnant wife, Sam, is attacked while Christmas shopping, an incident which takes a sudden confusing turn when it would seem that there are links to the case he is currently working on.

This is the eleventh in the DCI Gillard series, a series that is showing no sign of losing its touch. For me, one of the main reasons for the success is Gillard himself. A likeable character who, despite his rank, does not shy away from actual police work, I don’t think he would ever be content with sitting behind a desk, delegating work to other officers! This does not mean that he is a lone wolf, however: he leads his team well and has the respect of those he works with.

The plot is a fascinating one, taking you back to a world of old-school gangsters but with a very modern twist. Without giving away any spoilers, I liked the contrast of the very modern crime to the more traditional methods of information gathering with the use of informants, undercover officers and bugs. The plot did not play out how I thought it would and I enjoyed how we were kept in the dark just as much as the police as they tried to work out exactly what the crime would be.

The subplot involving Gillard’s wife, Sam, was well-executed and formed a vital part of the jigsaw helping Craig solve the case.

This is another excellent addition to the series and I am already looking forward to the next!

The 11th book in this excellent series. This book involves the parallel investigation into a murder of a pickpocket and a suspected large scale robbery. As always, DCI Craig Gillard, supported by his team, deals efficiently and professionally with the investigation process. This is a fast-paced read with excellent characters. Highly recommended.

This is a compelling read in the DCI Gillard series but can easily be read as a stand alone. The characterisation is interesting and believable and the plotting is excellent. I was totally engrossed to the last page in this fast paced, suspenseful read. Gillard's wife Sam is pregnant and I look forward to the next installment in the series. Well plotted, well written, it had a nice flow with plenty action and a 5* recommendation from me. Thanks to Net Galley and Canelo publishers for my ARC.

fast-paced and action packed, the plot definitely took twists you couldn't have seen coming.
There were so many criminals involved it was hard to keep track of who was who (although having not read the other 10 books in this series maybe you know them from previous books?)

Also, there was a lot of sexism here and the men were horrible but because they were so macho and masculine they were idolised??

The Body in the Shadows by Nick Louth is book 11 in the DCI Craig Gillard police crime thriller books. In this storyline the police are looking for a crime in the future that will make the criminals half a billion pounds, but they only have a week to find it.
Sam Gillard is attacked in a shopping centre and a young woman tries to kill her and her unborn child. These two random acts will be joined together at the end, when all the villains are caught.
Highly recommended

Another great episode in this series. Quite a complicated plot this time, but it was enjoyable to work put how the different strands were connected. I like Craig, the main detective . Others in the team were featured less in this book. The story is believable, interesting and the evidence well put together.

Another fantastic book in the Craig Gillard series. Interesting that this time it was a lot of new characters with just the odd reference to the existing team but it was as if they were part of the existing team all along. A great storyline that really has you hooked and wanting to read on until the book is finished. Highly recommended!

Number 11 in the DCI Craig Gillard Series. Exciting intro to the novel — added some additional suspense. Never too certain if there were going to be additional repercussions as a result. Entertaining read while lounging around the pool.

The concept of the electronic theft added a thought-provoking twist to the story. Interesting technology woven into the plot. Could this happen?

I really wanted to like this book but I don’t think crime novels are for me. I found the plot and storyline took forever to become engaging and I just wanted to hurry up and finish the story. Glad the people were convicted of financial fraud and the wife got justice but the story itself just wasn’t for me sadly.
