Observation - Drilus flavescens beetle larvae (1) - UK and Ireland. I was sorting through some older images from this year & was looking up a common name (or some kind of distinguishing name) for a picture of an adult and came across this page http://markgtelfer.co.uk/beetles/drilidae-drilus-flavescens/

Low & behold I recognised the larvae so quickly looked up these pics & they matched. It's funny how I ID some species by pure chance!

Perhaps more interesting is that these are normally found on chalk downland & this site is borderline levels, quite the opposite at least in terms of water levels! There are plenty of snails about though for them to munch on. I'll have to look out for empty snail shells & signs of predation.
