Leaf Spot - Phyllosticta kalmicola
Leaf spot is caused by the fungus Phyllosticta kalmicola. It is characterized by irregular, silvery spots with reddish borders. The black specks are the fruiting bodies (pycnidia) of the fungus. All the mountain laurels (Kalmia latifolia) that I passed while hiking were afflicted by this fungus.
Phyllosticta kalmicola is a common, yet significant plant pathogen in the family Botryosphaeriaceae.
