What you are looking at is a gelatinous blob with tiny midge eggs (Tanypodinae). In the center of the blob is a large Chironomid larva that appeared to have gotten inside the blob somehow and made itself a tunnel. It was eating the goo or the eggs, I'm not sure.

***This photo was taken 24 hours after collection. The tiny midge eggs had hatched and the large larva had grown a bit. The gelatinous matrix was beginning to break down.
1. So cool! I was personally surprised at how fast their development is. In a glass where I was holding a few dozen of them, each time I look there seems to be a new adult emerging. Posted 3 years ago
1. Yes - it happens so fast! Have your carnivorous plants caught any of the adults? Posted 3 years ago
1. None of the biting midges but some of the dance flies. Posted 3 years ago
1. That's one tango those dance flies will regret. Posted 3 years ago
2. Breath-taking Christine.
