Limnaecia phragmitella - young caterpillar Plucked this tiny caterpillar (inset bottom left is on a tooth pick) from the seedhead ("sausage") of some Reedmace (Typha) while looking for the little ground bugs (Chilacis typhae) living in it. Put it on a leaf for some photos and then on a different sausage for better background, but then it dug back into the seedhead and was gone within twenty seconds :o) Caterpillar,Cosmopterigidae,Lepidoptera,Limnaecia,Limnaecia phragmitella,Shy Cosmet Moth,nl: Lisdoddeveertje

Food

The larvae feed inside the seedheads of ''Typha'' species, including ''Typha angustifolia'' and ''Typha latifolia''. There are indications that young larvae mine in the spongy tissue of the leaf sheaths. The larvae have a whitish or pale tan body with a brown dorsal line. The dorsolateral and ventrolateral lines are composed of light brown irregular patches. The head is brown with darker brown spots and there are brown spots on the terminal abdominal segment.
