Looking back over the past 32 years of my profession as a Physical Therapist, I have seen inadequate emphasis being placed upon the benefits of performing a daily stretching program. Tragically, little emphasis is being placed upon the primary cause of arthritic joint deterioration, pain and slow gait (which directly result in a significant number of falls, and premature deaths from stroke and heart attack): adaptive muscle shortening (AMS). Occurring spontaneously in all skeletal muscle, whether in adaptation to stereotypical movement patterns (repetitive stress injury, or RSI) or overuse (sports) AMS effects exponentially increased destructive mechanical compression loads upon the joints, especially in the legs and spine.

Left untreated, AMS results in muscle imbalances that distort the body’s normal alignment: distorting one’s center of gravity leading to increased falls and related premature deaths in the senior population; and causing mechanical failure of the Myofascial System, resulting in pain due to trigger points within the muscle tissue. The distortions of muscle imbalance tend to magnify over time, resulting in an expanding portfolio of musculo-skeletal pain syndromes. The individual is set up for sports- and work-related injuries as well.

This full-body stretching program integrates a core strengthening regimen including the trunk, upper back, and hip musculature, and this duo-fold approach is highly complementary, because it helps prevent and reverse the trauma imposed by faulty posture related to AMS and muscle imbalance.
