Imagine getting from NYC and London in three & a half hours, or SF to Tokyo in six. Supersonic flights once existed but were never successfully commercialized. Boom Supersonic is trying to change that!
Supersonic flight promises faster travel, more time at the destination, reduced post-flight fatigue, more frequent travel, increased accessibility to far-flung places, and more.
Blake Scholl founded Boom in 2014 after being a plane geek his whole life. He was inspired after seeing the Concorde, the world's first scheduled supersonic passenger service, in a museum. He became obsessed with figuring out how to enable a supersonic renaissance.
Boom was founded on the philosophy that we need to overcome the challenges of supersonic passenger flights, not surrender to them.
Boom’s yet-to-be-built flagship product is its Overture aircraft. Overture is a 201-foot-long supersonic airplane capable of flying on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It will carry up to 88 passengers. Overture is designed to fly 4,250 nautical miles. This range allows it to fly international nonstop routes like Atlanta to London or Seattle to Tokyo.
In 2022, Boom announced a 3-year strategic partnership with the US Air Force. Meanwhile, American Airlines announced a commercial agreement to purchase 20 Overture aircraft. In 2021, United Airlines announced a commercial agreement to purchase 15 Overture aircraft.
In 2019, Boom announced it closed a $100 million Series B investment round led by Emerson Collective, including Y Combinator Continuity & Caffeinated Capital, bringing its valuation to more than $1 billion.
