The latest years, however, something seems to have shifted. Studies speak of a “Great Breakup”: women (and women of color even more so) are leaving their jobs at high rates and seem to be making the choice to do so in a crucial phase of their careers, just before making the first step up to leadership positions. In the words of author Mia Birdsong: “Instead of breaking the glass ceiling, would we rather leave the building altogether?” Have our priorities changed and, if this is the case, why? We are proud to announce that our newly appointed partner Evelien Jamaels is already making headlines.   Crowell’s home-grown Evelien Jamaels was promoted to partner in January and is already giving her second interview, this time to La Libre Eco for a feature article. The portrait covers Evelien’s background, her first steps in the legal profession and her career at our firm, but also her concrete work in topics like restructuring, whistleblowing, and teleworking.   The article will help you to get to know her and her fresh legal approach, which aims to keep things simple for her clients. As the article states, she wants to understand a company from the inside. In January 2023, a second Arco case will be initiated by Deminor, representing 14.000 new claimants after the Brussels Court declared a first Arco claim by a group of investors inadmissible. The mediatized Arco case concerns an investor dispute where 800,000 Arco shareholders stand to lose their entire investment after the bankruptcy of Dexia in 2011.  Interestingly, these cases are not being brought under the Belgian Class action law, but under general principles of judicial law. Find out why, and why that will matter.   ➡️ In this alert, Werner Eyskens and Evelien Van Espen outline key procedural obstacles for collective actions under Belgian judicial law, and how these are illustrated by the Arco claims. Last week, our Brussels “Women’s Leadership Initiative” team invited us to the Women’s Perspectives expo at Fondation A. It was a wonderful exhibition dedicated to women, with a beautiful collection of selected photographs. The exhibition features the work of 19 female artists, who share a common desire to denounce, break the codes and push back the boundaries on the issues of social justice, femininity and the environment. The project aims to broaden the gaze in a historical setting that has often limited the recognition of women artists. Each in their own way, these determined, pioneering and unique artists remind us that we live in a contemporary era that bears the indelible traces of history, which we must continue to contemplate with care. #exhibition #womensupportingwomen #inclusion #socialjustice
