Jeep is in an challenging spot. For decades, the brand occupied a unique spot in the minds of car buyers. It was the go-to choice for a rugged, off-road ready vehicle that was accessible to everyday buyers. Call them "adventure vehicles" if you like. There have been other vehicles that competed in that category (like the 4Runner) but Jeep has always held the top spot in buyers' minds. Now, Jeep is in a bit of a bind. On three fronts, actually. First, the new Ford Bronco has entered its category head on, with a rugged, affordable SUV of its own (it even sports a soft top). The new Toyota Land Cruiser will compete here, too. Secondly, Jeep has been encroaching on other categories, like luxury SUVs. You can now buy a Grand Wagoner for over $110K! That's Mercedes and Land Rover territory. It's also going down market, with vehicles like the Compass ($28K). Third, brands like Rivian are trying to re-design the "adventure vehicle" space by building fully-electric options. They aren't exactly affordable, but the base Rivian is only slightly more than a top-of-the-line electrified Wrangler. So instead of waging one battle for "affordable adventure vehicles," it's trying to compete on multiple fronts. Jeep brand sales were down 12% in 2022 and 9% so far this year. The Jeep brand is a great example of "category creep" – losing focus on your core category to pursue adjacent ones. What's the brand to do? Consider this: A brand can only occupy one space in the mind of a buyer. One category. A brand could own the "affordable adventure vehicle" category, the "luxury SUV" category, or the "electric adventure vehicle" category. But it can't own all three categories at once. Jeep has a choice - it can either compete across multiple categories, or it can double down on the one it wants to own outright. Brands like Ferrari and Honda understand this, which is why you'll never see an "affordable" Ferrari or a true "luxury" Honda. Does the American consumer associate Jeep as being a "luxury brand," an "off-road brand," or both? With the arrival of the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer years ago, Jeep is striving to push further upstream. The brand's lacked a proper three-row SUV to battle GM's Suburban/Yukon/Yukon Denali as well as the blue oval's Edition and more posh Lincoln Navigator...but is this product strategy working? Would this large, body-on-frame three-row SUV be better badged as Dodge or even Ram? The latter's buyers we know aren't afraid of splurging on a fully-loaded near six-figure 1500 or 2500. I recently spent a week testing a 2023 Grand Wagoneer L Series III which carried an as-tested price of $123,045. Its six-figure MSRP was, I do think, well-warranted given how sumptuous and tech-rich this massive luxury liner was. For many long hours on the highway, it was impeccably comfortable and easy to drive. I thought I'd miss the outgoing 6.4L HEMI V8, but its replacement new Hurricane Turbo-Six was a treat and surprisingly efficient too. After 513 miles, I averaged 17.4 mpg. And, unlike some other Stellantis products I've been in as of late, I wasn't confronted with any electrical gremlins or problems. I'd *really* like to see Stellantis execute an overdue Durango replacement atop this platform and see what happens sales-wise. Dodge could use another fresh addition to the lineup beyond the Hornet.

Jeep is in trouble. Chasing Range Rover by continuing to push up-market, crossing the $100K barrier, and completely abandoning its wildly popular boxy style and off-road cred, is likely to make things much worse. Don't believe me? Jeep still has nearly 50,000 brand new 2023 models sitting on dealer lots. And, astonishingly, it also still has 2000 2022 models that remain unsold. It's having a hard time selling vehicles. The Wagoneer S is basically a copy-and-paste of every other high-priced EV. I haven't read the press release, but I can almost guarantee the first selling point is something like, "0-60 in 2.2 seconds." They all say the same thing. People want a Jeep that looks like a Jeep and is valued like a Jeep and has the utility of a Jeep (whether it is ICE or electric).
