Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the World Health Organization said on May 5, 2023. WHO's International Health Regulations Emergency Committee discussed the pandemic on 4th May at its 15th meeting on Covid-19, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus concurred that the public health emergency of international concern, or PHEIC, declaration should end. The organization declared the coronavirus outbreak to be a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020, about six weeks before characterizing it as a pandemic. A PHEIC creates an agreement between countries to abide by WHO's recommendations for managing the emergency. Each country, in turn, declares its own public health emergency -- declarations that carry legal weight. Countries use them to marshal resources and waive rules in order to ease a crisis. #health #publichealth #covid

Today is the 175th anniversary of the 1848 Public Health Act. This piece of legislation is a milestone in the history of public health, highlighting for the first time the importance of population-level policies and proactive measures to protect the health of the nation. William Roberts, Chief Executive, RSPH: “It revolutionised the way we promote health as a nation, and it is remarkable that some of its ideas are still central to the public's health today, such as food safety, the importance of adequate housing, and the fact that the environment where we live influences our health.” Read more about the impact of the Public Health Act here: https://ow.ly/yo8l50PGi16 #PublicHealth #PublicHealthAct

Is the proposed Global Treaty by WHO an appropriate approach to tackle public health emergencies? WHO global health accord or WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response (‘WHO CA+’)—is purported to be a positive step towards a more equitable and robust response plan- ning for future public health emergencies for a uni- fied response. Presented by Intergovernmental Negotiating Body, the zero draft of the accord is being negotiated among countries currently for consideration of final draft at the 77th World Health Assembly scheduled in May 2024. However, the draft global accord has several gaps and serious questions still to be deliberated on to make it acceptable to countries and population across the world. We discuss that the global accord must address all issues like governance, regulatory, operational, information sharing, enforceability, quality and monitoring. Our commentary highlights what does this accord mean for low-income and middle-income countries especially when the world faced challenges in implementing International Health Regulations 2005 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking forward to discussion on this topical issue of global importance Link to the article : https://lnkd.in/d88H3X36
