Thanks for the truly wonderful and humbling post!
Meet Gabriel Evelyn (He/Him/His), amazing paralegal at Prather Ebner Wilson! Gabriel celebrates his third year with the firm in August. He brings so much to the table every day, from his passion for life to his unique perspective on the law (and his incredible singing voice!). Gabriel loves his role at Prather Ebner Wilson because of the everyday challenges. “There’s always something new to learn, a new challenge, a new concept to research,” he says. “[I help] uplift people to feel empowered enough to get the justice they deserve.” Gabriel also serves as director at large of the Chicago Paralegal Association. “I strive to create those spaces for our membership and anybody who’s willing to visit the community or participate,” he says. “I help with my fellow board members to create those safe spaces for people to be exactly who they are.” In April, Gabriel presented at InfoTrack US’s Legal Up 2023 Virtual Conference. His session, "Black by the Book: My Blackness, the Law, & the Legal Field," explored Gabriel’s duality as a Black, Latinx, queer, cisgender man working in the legal profession. Gabriel says his Blackness becomes his “other”-ness in predominantly white spaces but adds that “working within the legal system grants me and many other Black individuals the ability to build toward effecting long-lasting, positive change.” The advice Gabriel gives law firms working to be more inclusive: It’s just about making space for individuals who didn’t have a seat at the table, hearing with intent to listen rather than hearing with intent to respond. The former comes from a place of empathy and understanding and awareness of other peoples’ unique lived experiences. The advice Gabriel gives non-white people who are interested in the legal profession: If you’re passionate about the law, still persevere. There will always be struggle and strife — in the U.S., it’s tougher to exist with melanin in the first place. But you can always create your own space and your own change. In an upcoming blog post, Gabriel shares more from his "Black by the Book" presentation, details about founding the Chicago Paralegal Association during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways he works for positive, long-lasting change in the legal profession. #paralegal #paralegals #chicagoparalegals #chicagoparalegalassociation #paralegallife #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #membershipmatters #law #legal #legalorganization
