Out of curiosity, I watched "Who is Sabato de Sarno? A Gucci Movie" on MUBI yesterday. As you're likely aware, the context is Gucci's recent disappointing financial outcomes and a daring initiative to revamp the brand by focusing on its core values. Sabato de Sarno is leading the charge in his new role as creative director. However, it wasn't this business intrigue that drew me to the film. Instead, I was interested in the broader supposed trend of luxury brands becoming content creators and even art producers. This particular work is indeed released on MUBI, an "artsy" streaming platform, rather than on Gucci's YouTube channel. In this sense, I was let down. The film showcases flawlessly edited aesthetics from Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (somewhat reminiscent of William Klein), which you'll be able to judge by watching the shorter video regarding Gucci loafers included here. However, both movies are blatantly commercial, illustrate perfectly the new focus on the brand's icons and accessories .... and lack any emotional depth. My opinion? It's a well-produced, 20-minute promotional film with hints second degree for dedicated fans or use on social media. However, it's not something I would pay to see in a cinema, and it certainly doesn't confirm Gucci's transformation into an art producer. Who else has seen the short movie?
