I'm proud to share our new report, the "European CCAM Outlook 2023." As lead author, I had the privilege of working with 13 leading practitioners in automated transport to explore the future of cooperative, connected, and automated mobility (CCAM) in Europe. The report explores the drivers, barriers, and potential milestones on the path towards CCAM adoption across European public transport systems.
Here are three key takeaways from our study:
1️⃣ Technological Maturity: With the technological maturity of CCAM still limited, use cases remain narrow and sensitive to a wide range of parameters, including route length, fleet size and traffic conditions. This limitation directly impacts regulatory, societal, and market conditions, consequently impeding the integration of CCAM within our public transport systems.
2️⃣ Milestones: The study emphasises crucial milestones that need to be achieved, including the commercial availability and affordability of automated vehicles, achieving full autonomy without the need for a safety operator, and improved vehicle performance. Meeting these milestones will be pivotal to unlocking the first profitable, feasible, and high-quality CCAM use cases in public transport.
3️⃣ Collaboration: The research underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration. Ensuring simultaneous development of CCAM technology, regulation, market, and social acceptance will be instrumental in realising the full potential of CCAM.
The future of CCAM in Europe is promising, yet the path to its widespread adoption is not without obstacles. The European CCAM Outlook 2023 serves as a road map to guide us on this journey. We hope this research will be a call to action for stakeholders to collaborate and overcome these barriers.
