The final conference of the NEWLEAD project (#unileaders_eu) will take place on 25 October in Brussels. The event aims to gather partners and stakeholders to reflect on the outcomes of the project and discuss how to shape the future of #leadership development for university leaders in Europe. This occasion provides a platform to delve into the challenges facing current and future university leaders as they navigate the ever-evolving landscape of higher education. Also, the event will focus on strategies to support and facilitate sustainable and impactful #leadershipdevelopment initiatives across Europe and present EUA’s plans in this respect. The event is aimed at a diverse audience, including NEWLEAD partners, university rectors and vice rectors, presidents and secretaries general of national university associations, EUA board members, partner organisations and European and national policy makers. This is a hybrid event, organised in partnership with Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (VLIR). Access to the event is entirely free. As I reflect on this thought-provoking article, via Higher Education Policy Institute, I am reminded of the significant impact that universities have on shaping #leadership. It is fascinating to learn that a substantial number of world leaders have graduated from UK and USA universities. But it also raises an important question: does their success (or lack of!) in leadership stem from their #education or is it merely coincidental? And if we assume university education has had an impact on their leadership (what a frightening thought in some cases!), failure to acknowledge our collective responsibility for leadership learning may have far-reaching consequences for organisations, nations, and systems. My view is that’s imperative that we strive for continuous improvement in our approach to leadership education, anticipating and mitigating conflicts and disputes. Only by doing so can we ensure a more prosperous and harmonious future, not only for ourselves but for generations to come. #universities

The International Comparative Approach to Higher Education Leadership Development: Evaluating the Longer-term Impacts The international comparative approach has become an increasingly important approach to higher education leadership development, with higher education leaders from the global south looking into practices in higher education management in the global north for comparative insights. But it is always a delicate task in comparative studies to decide how the “best practices” in the developed countries can be adopted and adapted to suit the local contexts and the local needs in the developing world. This study examines the impacts of the Global Academic Leadership Development (GALD) program on Chinese university leaders, a few years after their three-month exposure to the Canadian system of higher education governance and management. The findings of the study suggest that the long-term impacts of system awareness tend to happen at a more global and conceptual level, with most leaders reporting broader global perspectives on their work. There are self-reported cases of direct borrowing of specific policies, but the borrowing is done in ways that are sensitive to local contexts. The study shows that the danger of simplistic borrowing of alien practices without local adjustment is avoidable if the leadership program provides a rich historical, cultural and social context during their exposure to a foreign higher education system. As an effective and safe approach to inspire local innovation, the international comparative approach to higher education leadership development should be encouraged as a new model of leadership development that focuses on wider system awareness from a glo-cal perspective, beyond individual and organizational leadership skills and competences.
