Body Language - Part 4

Non-Verbal: Feelings & Attitudes are silently communicated

1.Voice

Voice is an essential component that conveys much more than the words being spoken.

How often have you heard “it was not what she said that hurt, it was HOW she said it”

  • Tone: conveys emotions and intentions, a warm and friendly tone sends a message of approachability. A sharp and aggressive tone could convey anger or confrontation.

  • Pitch: refers to the how high or low the voice is. High pitch is normally associated with excitement -anxiety and a well-pitched voices could convey a calm and confident approach.

  • Volume: denotes the loudness of the voice and the emotional state. A very loud voice indicates anger, frustration, or aggression. A very soft voice could be interpreted as lack of confidence, nervousness, or shyness.

  • Pace: is the speed with which we speak. A well-paced voice would be speaking at about 80 – 100 minutes per minute, more or less than this could be a barrier in communication.

  • Pauses & silences:  strategic use of these can enhance communication by creating space for reflection and contemplation.

  • Inflection:  steady modulation of the voice enhances communication as the voice can be used to asked questions, make a command, be assertive etc.

  • Quality & Throw: a soft voice can enhance it through a stronger throw and a louder/coarser voice can soften the impact through a softer throw

2. Posture

Posture conveys silent messages while communication. Let us look at some postures and what they can convey...

  • A balanced and open posture is neutral alignment, shoulders & chest gently lifted, feet hip apart, arms on the side. You should look & feel taller than you are. An open posture makes one approachable, people feel safe as it sends messages of confidence and a positive self-image.

  • Slouched Posture can indicate disinterest, tiredness, boredom. A slouched posture while communicating can send wrong messages. Be mindful of the same

  • Crossed arms & legs can be seen as a sign of defensiveness, resistance, or a closed mind and attitude. It can also signify discomfort and insecurity.

3. Gestures

Gestures to avoid

  • Fidgeting

  • Invading personal space

  • Checking on time

  • Covering mouth or face

  • Inappropriate touching

  • Too much gesticulation

  • Not using hands to express

  • Yawning

  • Preoccupation with other stuff

  • Crossed arms or legs

Remember body language can be subtle and nuanced. As already explained 93 % of emotions- feelings – attitudes are transmitted through our body language. So being mindful of ones non verbal cues & consciously inculcating use of body signals which convey openness, respect and interest will significantly improve communication and interpersonal relations.

Go ahead & try it – and be amazed with the outcome!!!!
