Description

Wingspan 16 to 20 mm. This moth is dark from the head for approximately two thirds the length of the wing, then a noticeable change to a band of slightly mottled white for the final third.

Woods and woodland margins where birch occurs.

When to see it

The moths are on the wing from July to September, and fly from late evening into the night, when they can be attracted to light.

Life History

The larvae occur in May, spinning and rolling birch leaves together.

UK Status

Fairly frequent and widespread throughout Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

VC55 Status

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident).
