Info

Phoronis ovalis is the smallest horseshoe worm of the genus Phoronis and belongs with Phoronis hippocrepia Wright, 1856 to the perforating species that form burrows in coral rock, bivalves and barnacle encrustations.

Predominantly, the bivalves Perna perna (Linnaeus, 1758) and the abalone Haliotis rufescens Swainson, 1822 are infested.

We would like to thank Dr. Alan C. Trimble, Department of Biology, University of Washington, Seattle (USA) for the first photo of Phoronis ovalis.
