Can FSU softball win the Women's College World Series? Here are experts' predictions

Dan Rorabaugh

The Florida State softball team is one of seven teams in the Women's College World Series facing the same difficult question: Can Oklahoma be stopped?

The Sooners come into Oklahoma City as back-to-back national champions, the first of those titles coming at the hands of the Seminoles in 2021. They are once again the heavy favorites after going 55-1 this season.

No. 3 FSU (55-9) is the next highest seed left in the NCAA softball tournament and would face OU in the championship series. First, however, the Seminoles must survive a bracket that includes No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Washington and No. 15 Utah. They also must contend with No. 4 Tennessee, No. 5 Alabama and No. 9 Stanford.

Florida State won the national championship in 2018. Can they win another? Here's what softball experts are saying:

Live updates:Florida State vs. Oklahoma for the Women's College World Series championship

Ryan Aber, The Oklahoman: Oklahoma sweeps FSU in WCWS championship series

"With Jordy Bahl pitching the way she is right now, and the depth of OU's lineup, it's hard not to pick the Sooners right now. Sure, another team could jump up and beat OU once, but it's hard to fathom them losing twice in a championship series."

Cory Diaz, The Daily Advertiser: FSU beats Oklahoma in 3 games, wins WCWS

"Florida State doesn't have what Oklahoma has, and that's the indelible pressure to win it all. With Kathryn Sandercock leading a stout pitching staff that doesn't make many mistakes and Kaley Mudge fueling a capable lineup, the Seminoles make enough plays to knock off the Sooners in dramatic fashion."

Amanda Scarborough, ESPN: Oklahoma and Oklahoma State play in WCWS championship series

"Florida State's coaching staff always comes up with the best plans in terms of defensive shifts, pitching to matchups and unique approaches to hit off each pitcher they face. The players are always prepared and confident in their plans. Plus, many of their players have WCWS experience."

'Everyone is beatable':Former FSU softball coach believes Seminoles can win championship

Maxwell Donaldson, The Tuscaloosa News: Oklahoma sweeps FSU in WCWS championship series

"The Sooners have been the best team all season, expect them to roll through the field and win their third straight title. Oklahoma has the most talent and proves it in Oklahoma City."

Cora Hall, Knoxville News Sentinel: Tennessee beats FSU in semifinal

"Tennessee will ride its postseason momentum to its second WCWS finals appearance, but that won’t be enough to take down Oklahoma. The Sooners had their scare in the NCAA Super Regionals against Clemson and they’re going to be at their best in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma will three-peat and continue its historical dominance."

Kayla Braud, ESPN: Oklahoma and Tennessee advance to WCWS championship series

"Teams like Florida State and Tennessee have proved that baserunning can be the difference in winning close ballgames. Stolen bases and finding a run with high instincts on the basepaths might just be the difference in a few ballgames at the WCWS."

Tyler Tachman, The Indianapolis Star: FSU beats Oklahoma in 3 games, wins WCWS

"If you’re looking for a potential champion other than Oklahoma, don’t sleep on Florida State. The Seminoles won the ACC regular season and tournament championships, plus they have the league's Pitcher and Coach of the Year."

Scott Wright, The Oklahoman: Oklahoma State beats FSU in semifinal

"This (Oklahoma) team, and this program, remain on a different level than everyone else. Until someone proves they can unseat the Sooners, they will reign supreme over the rest of the field."

Jenny Dalton-Hill, ESPN: Tennessee and Oklahoma advance to WCWS championship series

"I'm looking for which team celebrates the small stuff the best. That's the team that usually is in the driver's seat. Energy in a dugout is contagious on the field. A dugout that goes quiet translates to flat play. Oklahoma has been doing this all season. Can other schools keep up the energy in the long days of Oklahoma heat? Emotion and energy from nonstarters make a huge impact."

Thomas Jones, Austin American-Statesman: Tennessee beats FSU in semifinal

"Maybe these Sooners are mortal, maybe they’re not. I think a loaded WCWS lineup will ding Oklahoma at least once, but this team is too talented, too deep and too multi-faceted to lose twice in the double-elimination format. Jordy Bahl gets her most outstanding player award and the 2023 Sooners lay claim to being the best college softball team of all time."

Ainslie Lee, Gainesville Sun: Oklahoma sweeps FSU in WCWS championship series

Florida State scared Oklahoma back on March 14, but the postseason-version of the Sooners won’t let the Seminoles threaten in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma’s lineup will be too much for Florida State, despite the ‘Noles’ impressive staff of pitchers.

Christina Long, Greenville News: Oklahoma sweeps FSU in WCWS championship series

"The Sooners are the most complete team in the country. Beating them once is hard enough, but twice is too much to ask."

What are Florida State softball's odds of winning WCWS?

DraftKings Sportsbook gives FSU the second-best odds to win the Women's College World Series at +500. Oklahoma has the best odds at -800.
