QNAP NMP-1000 Network Media Player Review

Value & Conclusion »

Software Applications

Upon inserting the QNAP Application CD, one is greeted by a clean interface to select the various programs for installation along with digital documentation on the unit.

QNAP Finder

There are three applications included with the NMP-1000. The first is a very useful and simple program called "QNAP Finder". It serves the simple purpose of searching for any QNAP device within your network and displaying the results in a list. You may then doubleclick on it to access the specific web interface. This application should come in very handy for those who have more than one QNAP unit or use DHCP to assign IP addresses.

QNAP NetBak Replicator

The NetBak Replicator allows you to backup specific files and folders to the NMP-1000. You may schedule a time for backup to do so automatically or start/restore it manually anytime. The application is rather simple but should work well for home use.

QNAP QGet

Last but not least, there is QGet. This application acts as your BitTorrent client and looks much like any of the numerous other programs out there. The big difference with QGet is, that it sends the torrent file to the NMP-1000, which then starts downloading the file on its own. So you may turn off your PC at any time while the NMP-1000 keeps on crunching along. Start a download in the evening, go the bed and enjoy the file in the morning - straight on your TV in your living room.

Web Interface

You may also access the NMP-1000 trough a web interface. This allows you to access any settings and functionality over the network instead of sitting in front of it. Upon entering the IP address assigned to the network media player, you will be greeted with the above screen. In addition to this functionality you may easily manage the user base, which is allowed to access the unit along with numerous other network related settings. It should become clear at this point, that QNAP has sprinkled some of the functionality of their NAS devices into the NMP-1000, so one could even use the unit as an entry-level network accessible storage.

Web Interface Gallery

You may even access the download station, which is basically a QGet web interface to add BitTorrent tasks to the device. So you could add tasks from your work PC over the Internet, where you would not have QGet installed on the local workstation. You may also access the shared folders over a web interface, which is a nice gimmick, but I would suggest you use FTP instead.
