*Biography Roumain was born June 4, 1907, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in a wealthy family. His grandfather, Auguste Tancred, was president of Haiti from 1912 to 1913. He attended Catholic schools in Port-au-Prince and later studied in Belgium, #Switzerland, France and Germany. At twenty, he returned to Haiti and was co-creator of “The Native Journal” with Emile Roumer, Philippe Thoby-Marcelin, Carl Brouard, and Antonio Vieux, in which they published poems and short stories. He was very active in the fight against the U.S. occupation of Haiti (1915-1934). He is the founder of the labor movement and the Haitian Communist. In 1934 he founded the Haitian Communist Party. Because of his political activities, his participation in the resistance movement against the American presence, and especially the creation of its share of the Haitian Communist Party, he was often arrested and eventually forced into exile by the President of the time Stenio Vincent. During his years in exile, Roumain worked and made friends with many writers and poets of his time, like Langston Hughes. He also attended Columbia University in the City of New York. After the change of government in Haiti, he was allowed to return to his homeland. After returning he founded the *National Bureau of Ethnology. In 1942, President Elie Lescot invests it with a load of a diplomat in Mexico City. He completed at the same time two of his most influential books: the book of poetry ebony and the novel of the Dew, which sold yet within a thousand copies the first year after its publication. Most of the work of Roumain expresses the frustration and rage of a people that has been trampled for centuries.
