Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson opens up about depression struggles, more

Trey Barrineau
USA TODAY

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson seems like the last person on Earth who'd have anything to be depressed about, yet the action-film superstar and former pro-wrestling sensation tells The Hollywood Reporter that deep feelings of despair dogged him throughout his early life:
"I didn't know why I didn't want to do anything. I had never experienced anything like that."
He also talks about the shock of losing his good friend and Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in November.
"I pulled over and looked at my messages and had a moment where I just caught my breath. We said a prayer right then to give his daughter strength — because we had talked about our daughters. That's what we would talk about. ... He was a beautiful man, and in that crazy world, that's really something."
The grinding  poverty of his childhood in Hawaii is in there.
"We were living in an efficiency that cost $120 a week. We come home, and there's a padlock on the door and an eviction notice. My mom starts bawling. She just started crying and breaking down. 'Where are we going to live? What are we going to do?' "
And his raw ambition? That's in there, too.
"What do I want? I want the world."
There's much more in THR's next cover story, so read the whole thing.
