Ernest Walter, known as Walter, was a young pilot in the seaplane squadron at Point Cook in Victoria when he was lost in the sea in Port Philip Bay. He enlisted in the general dutoes branch of the RAAF 20 January 1936, was promoted to Air Cadet then to Pilot Officer 1 January 1937. He did his initial training at the Point Cook Base, before joining 5 Squad. He returned to Pt Cook 28 June 1937.
