Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

The family <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> currently includes 25 species that are classified<br />

into eight genera. Two of <strong>the</strong>se genera, Palaeotimia Meunier <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Prodryomyza<br />

Hennig, are m<strong>on</strong>otypic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> are represented by fossils <strong>on</strong>ly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a third<br />

genus, Dryomyza Fallén, c<strong>on</strong>tains two additi<strong>on</strong>al fossil species. Several<br />

genera that were <strong>on</strong>ce placed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> have been transferred<br />

to o<strong>the</strong>r families, mostly within <strong>the</strong> superfamily Sciomyzoidea (Coelopidae,<br />

Helcomyzidae, Helosciomyzidae, Heterocheilidae, Platystomatidae),<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> at <strong>on</strong>e time, <strong>the</strong> family was treated as a tax<strong>on</strong> within <strong>the</strong> Sciomyzidae.<br />

Adults are relatively large for acalyptrates, with body lengths of up to 18<br />

mm, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> most specimens are generally yellowish brown or dark gray. The<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> genera <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> species is restricted to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn hemisphere,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> family is noticeably lacking from <strong>the</strong> tropics or subtropics.<br />

Only four species are known from <strong>the</strong> Oriental Regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Zoological catalogs, checklists, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> equivalent databases are indispensable<br />

tools for any<strong>on</strong>e needing a reference to a currently accepted name<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> frequently to o<strong>the</strong>r informati<strong>on</strong> relating to that tax<strong>on</strong>, such as bibliographic<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong>al data. This is possible because most informati<strong>on</strong><br />

is filed under a species’ scientific name, which is <strong>the</strong> key to retrieval of informati<strong>on</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> literature. The system is dynamic, however, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject<br />

to interpretati<strong>on</strong>. The tax<strong>on</strong>omic literature is c<strong>on</strong>stantly changing to reflect<br />

recent work, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> some species are known by more than <strong>on</strong>e name. Thus<br />

a complete listing of names, including syn<strong>on</strong>yms, is an important starting<br />

point for locating informati<strong>on</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r as <strong>the</strong> basis for applied <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> basic<br />

research or simply to satisfy a curiosity.<br />

The informati<strong>on</strong> included in a catalog is usually arranged in a logical<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> organized format that allows for its c<strong>on</strong>venient <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> rapid c<strong>on</strong>veyance-in<br />

short, a quick <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> easy storage <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> retrieval system. The format <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> amount<br />

of informati<strong>on</strong> presented varies greatly, however. Our use of <strong>the</strong> term catalog<br />

is intended to c<strong>on</strong>vey a more comprehensive treatment, including informati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> all valid names, syn<strong>on</strong>yms, type species, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> status <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

depositi<strong>on</strong> of primary types. The bibliographic secti<strong>on</strong> includes complete<br />

references (author, date, original citati<strong>on</strong>), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<strong>the</strong>r biotic<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> are also provided. Not all citati<strong>on</strong>s that occur in <strong>the</strong> literature<br />

of <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> are included in this catalog or <strong>the</strong> bibliographic secti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

especially where we suspect that <strong>the</strong> species being treated was misidentified,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> inclusi<strong>on</strong> would fur<strong>the</strong>r promulgate inaccurate distributi<strong>on</strong>al data.<br />

Diagnosis. Adult. Medium-sized to large flies (body length 4.0-18.0<br />

mm); moderately robust, c<strong>on</strong>spicuously setulose to moderately or str<strong>on</strong>gly<br />

setose; yellow to brown or gray, moderately microtomentose. Head:<br />

Postocellar setae l<strong>on</strong>g, parallel or slightly divergent; 1-3 lateroclinate<br />

fr<strong>on</strong>to-orbital setae. Antennae narrowly separated basally; antenna generally<br />

oriented ventrally; scape with setulae extended <strong>on</strong> to medial surface;<br />

pedicel short, lacking a complete dorsal seam. Face uniformly sclerotized,<br />

shallowly c<strong>on</strong>vex in profile; parafacial suture complete, extended with associated,<br />

shiny ridge to postgenal area; gena high (ca. 1/2-2/3 eye height),<br />

ventral half mostly setulose, dorsal half mostly bare; clypeus large, c<strong>on</strong>spicuous,<br />

sometimes protruding. Thorax: Acrostichal setae ei<strong>the</strong>r absent<br />

or with a prescutellar pair; dorsocentral setae 1-6; metepisternum bare;<br />

katepisternal suture more or less straight, not arched dorsally posteriorly;<br />

prosternum bare, straplike, extended laterally to join propleur<strong>on</strong> as a narrow,<br />

precoxal bridge; proepisternal seta l<strong>on</strong>g; proepimeral seta lacking.<br />

Wing hyaline to lightly infuscate; crossveins sometimes clouded; costa<br />

unbroken, bearing <strong>on</strong>ly setulae, not spinose; subcosta complete; apical<br />

secti<strong>on</strong> of vein M nearly straight, terminating posterior of wing apex;<br />

crossvein bm-cu distinctly apical of vein CuA 2 ; vein CuA 2 +A 1 evident<br />

to wing margin; vein A 2 bey<strong>on</strong>d alula as a l<strong>on</strong>g, curved crease. Midtibia<br />

with posterior (variable), preapical, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> apical setae <strong>on</strong>ly; basitarsi lacking<br />

terminal ventral processes; male forebasitarsus unmodified; apical 2<br />

tarsomeres flattened <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> somewhat exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed. Abdomen: Sternite 1 short<br />

but well sclerotized; sternites 1-2 incompletely separated; spiracles 2-5 in<br />

tergites. Female with 3 (1+2) small sperma<strong>the</strong>cae.<br />

Egg. Creamy white; el<strong>on</strong>gate (length 1.2-1.4 mm, width 0.4-0.5 mm),<br />

bearing a pair of flanges, extended dorsolaterally from sides; chori<strong>on</strong> with<br />

fine, h<strong>on</strong>eycomb-like reticulati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Third-instar larva. Typically maggot-like, cylindrical, anterior end tapered,<br />

posterior end generally broadly rounded; anterior spiracle <strong>on</strong> short<br />

process, fan-shaped, digitate, with numerous terminal openings; posterior<br />

spiracles separate, <strong>on</strong> short or el<strong>on</strong>gate respiratory tubes, each spiracle with<br />

3 slits, surrounded by a circlet of plumose hydrofuge hairs (not in fascicles);<br />

anal opening <strong>on</strong> protuberance, this sometimes subdivided into lobes<br />

that bear spines or star-like sclerites around anus.<br />

Puparium. Dark brown, ovoid with a moderately rugose surface.<br />

Adult <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> are similar to Coelopidae <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Helcomyzidae <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

are sometimes c<strong>on</strong>fused with Heleomyzidae <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Scathophagidae. They<br />

are distinguished from <strong>the</strong>se <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<strong>the</strong>r families of Schizophora, especially<br />

those in <strong>the</strong> superfamily Sciomyzoidea, by <strong>the</strong> following combinati<strong>on</strong> of

characters: postocellar setae l<strong>on</strong>g, parallel or slightly divergent; antennal<br />

bases approximate basally, narrowly separated; pedicel short, lacking a<br />

complete dorsal seam; oral vibrissae absent; face uniformly sclerotized,<br />

usually shallowly c<strong>on</strong>vex medially; clypeus large <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> prominent; greater<br />

ampulla lacking; prosternum bare, strap-like, well separated from propleur<strong>on</strong>;<br />

wing lacking costal spines; crossvein bm-cu aligned distinctly apical to<br />

vein CuA 2 ; some or all tibiae bearing a preapical dorsal seta.<br />

Biology. Two distinctly different biologies are dem<strong>on</strong>strated in <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

history of this family. The larvae of Oedoparena Curran are predators of intertidal<br />

barnacles (Burger et al. 1980, Suwa 1981) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> are thus <strong>on</strong>ly known<br />

from maritime coasts. The o<strong>the</strong>r genera, where informati<strong>on</strong> is available,<br />

prefer humid envir<strong>on</strong>ments such as forests where <strong>the</strong>re is an under story of<br />

shaded, low vegetati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> where decaying organic matter is found. Larvae<br />

in <strong>the</strong>se habitats have been discovered to feed in rotting plants <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fungi,<br />

dead animals ranging from insects <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mollusks to vertebrate carri<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

even in human excrement. The larvae are saprophagous, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> females usually<br />

lay eggs directly <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> rotting food source.<br />

Distributi<strong>on</strong>. Species of <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> are largely temperate in distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> thus far are exclusively known from <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn hemisphere. With <strong>the</strong><br />

excepti<strong>on</strong> of Oedoparena, which is strictly coastal in distributi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

genera occur most frequently in humid, forested habitats. Oedoparena is<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly known from <strong>the</strong> cool, maritime coasts of <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Pacific (Japan,<br />

Pacific Northwest of North America), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r extant genera of <strong>the</strong><br />

family are widespread across <strong>the</strong> Holarctic Regi<strong>on</strong> where <strong>the</strong>ir preferred<br />

habitats are found. Only four species occur in <strong>the</strong> Oriental Regi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>the</strong>se are found primarily in areas with temperate climates. As noted previously,<br />

<strong>the</strong> family is noticeably lacking in <strong>the</strong> Afrotropical, Australasian, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Neotropical Regi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Table of extant genera<br />

The following table lists <strong>the</strong> extant genera of <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> in <strong>the</strong> order<br />

found in <strong>the</strong> catalog, with a summary of <strong>the</strong> number of extant species<br />

known from each zoogeographic regi<strong>on</strong>. The number in <strong>the</strong> total column is<br />

less than <strong>the</strong> sum of those in each regi<strong>on</strong> as species are known from more<br />

than <strong>on</strong>e regi<strong>on</strong>.

Classificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> nomenclature. The c<strong>on</strong>cept of <strong>the</strong> family <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong><br />

adopted here includes six extant <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> two fossil genera. The names of three<br />

genera (Dryomyza, Dryope, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Neuroctena) need clarificati<strong>on</strong>, as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have been c<strong>on</strong>fused, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> errors c<strong>on</strong>cerning <strong>the</strong>ir usage have been perpetuated<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> promulgated in <strong>the</strong> literature.<br />

The type species of Dromyza has often been cited as D. vetula Fallén<br />

(= Musca flaveola Fabricius, 1794) through <strong>the</strong> subsequent designati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

Westwood (1840: 165). Dryomyza vetula, however, was not an originally<br />

included species, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Westwood showed no syn<strong>on</strong>ymy that would link<br />

that species <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> name with any of <strong>the</strong> originally included species (Sabrosky<br />

1999). Thus, Westwood’s type designati<strong>on</strong> is invalid. Zetterstedt<br />

(1846: 2082) published <strong>the</strong> next type designati<strong>on</strong> for Dryomyza when he<br />

listed Dryomyza anilis Fallén as <strong>the</strong> type species. Dryomyza anilis is an<br />

originally included species, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zetterstedt’s subsequent designati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

thus valid.<br />

Robineau-Desvoidy (1830) proposed <strong>the</strong> genus Dryope for two of his<br />

species: D. communis <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> D. liturata. Coquillett (1910) subsequently designated<br />

Dryomyza communis (= Musca flaveola Fab., 1794) as <strong>the</strong> type<br />

species of Dryope, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> as this species is an originally included species, this<br />

designati<strong>on</strong> is valid <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> generic name is available.<br />

The third generic name, Neuroctena R<strong>on</strong>dani, 1868, is invalid. The<br />

type species of Neuroctena by m<strong>on</strong>otypy is Dryomyza anilis, which had<br />

previously been designated as <strong>the</strong> type species of Dryomyza (Zetterstedt<br />

1846). Neuroctena is thus an objective, junior syn<strong>on</strong>ym of Dryomyza <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

is an invalid name.<br />

Czerny (1930) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> several subsequent authors (Séguy 1934, Hendel<br />

1937, Stackelberg 1970, Ozerov 1987, 1998, 1999, Ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ler 1998, Zuijlen<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Beuk 2002, Carles-Tolrá & Báez 2002) have recognized <strong>the</strong> genus<br />

“Neuroctena” as a separate genus. As noted above, however, Neuroctena<br />

is an invalid name, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> oldest available <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> valid name for Czerny

et al.’s generic c<strong>on</strong>cept of “Neuroctena” is Dryomyza. Czerny (1930) also<br />

recognized Dryomyza as a separate genus (separate from “Neuroctena”)<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> included D. flaveola <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> D. decrepita Zetterstedt in it. If D. flaveola<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> related species are recognized as bel<strong>on</strong>ging to a separate genus from<br />

Dryomyza, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> oldest available <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> valid name for this genus would<br />

be Dryope. In summary, <strong>the</strong> genus for which “Neuroctena” has sometimes<br />

been used in <strong>the</strong> literature (Czerny 1930, Séguy 1934, Hendel 1937, Stackelberg<br />

1970, Ozerov 1987, 1998, 1999, Ch<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ler 1998, Zuijlen & Beuk<br />

2002, Carles-Tolrá & Báez 2002) is actually Dryomyza, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in <strong>the</strong>se same<br />

cases, what has been called Dryomyza is Dryope.<br />

The phylogenetic relati<strong>on</strong>ships for <strong>the</strong> genera included in <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> for <strong>the</strong> families within <strong>the</strong> Sciomyzoidea have not been fully<br />

resolved (McAlpine 1991). Most phylogenetic c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s are ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

preliminary or <strong>the</strong>y are c<strong>on</strong>cerned with <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>ophyly of a particular<br />

genus or small group of genera <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> not how <strong>the</strong>se lineages are phylogenetically<br />

related to o<strong>the</strong>r such clades. J. F. McAlpine (1989), for example,<br />

suggested that <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>ophyly of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> (Dryomyzinae in his<br />

sense) is supported by: (1) metasternum bare <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> (2) abdominal spiracles<br />

2-5 in <strong>the</strong> ventral margins of <strong>the</strong>ir respective tergites (except for Oedoparena<br />

minor Suwa <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> fossil species Prodryomyza electrica Hennig).<br />

Mathis & Steyskal (1980) provided evidence <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>ophyly of Oedoparena:<br />

(1) anepisternum setulose, (2) antennae approximate at base,<br />

(3) clypeus relatively well developed, (4) loss of acrostichal setae, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

(5) an associati<strong>on</strong> with barnacles. However, <strong>the</strong> clypeal, acrostichal, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

antennal characters occur elsewhere in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>ir phylogenetic<br />

importance is questi<strong>on</strong>able <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> needs fur<strong>the</strong>r assessment. The<br />

setose anepisternum <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a close associati<strong>on</strong> with barnacles may indicate<br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>ophyly of <strong>the</strong> genus.<br />

Although Ozerov (1998) divided <strong>the</strong> extant six genera into two tribes,<br />

Dryomyzini <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Oedoparenini, that precedent is not followed here because<br />

<strong>the</strong> placement of <strong>the</strong> extinct genera within <strong>the</strong>se tribes has not been clarified.<br />

Moreover, <strong>the</strong> tribes were not proposed within a phylogenetic c<strong>on</strong>text<br />

nor was evidence (synapomorphies) elaborated to support <strong>the</strong>ir recogniti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Oedoparena, however, is certainly distinct in its morphology <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural<br />

history from o<strong>the</strong>r genera of <strong>the</strong> family <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> may merit recogniti<strong>on</strong> as a<br />

separate tribe.<br />

The genus Helcomyza Curtis <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> related genera have sometimes been<br />

classified as <strong>the</strong> subfamily Helcomyzinae within <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong> (Czerny<br />

1930, Séguy 1934, Griffiths 1972, Steyskal 1987, McAlpine 1989).<br />

McAlpine (1991) enumerated several characters that distinguish <strong>the</strong> Helco-

myzidae as a family within <strong>the</strong> Sciomyzoidea <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> as separate from <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong>,<br />

Ropalomeridae, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Coelopidae. McAlpine fur<strong>the</strong>r suggested <strong>the</strong><br />

possibility that Helcomyzidae is <strong>the</strong> sister group to <strong>the</strong> Coelopidae. We follow<br />

McAlpine’s precedent <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> for <strong>the</strong> present, treat <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dryomyzidae</strong>, Helcomyzidae,<br />

Coelopidae, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Heterocheilidae as separate families.<br />
