RANDOLPH L. WRIGHT, OF WEDGEFIELD, SOUTH CAROLINA.
BARREL-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11 1915.
Application filed July 24, 1914. Serial No. 852,884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH L. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of lVedgefield, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Imp-rovements in Barrel-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to barrel holders and particularly to a device for supporting barrels, preferably kegs containing nails, in position whereby the said keg may be tilted to discharge the contents thereof wholly or in part without undue effort of the operator, the said invention furthermore including novel means whereby the keg is held in a vertical or upright position by gravity when manipulation thereof ceases.
Furthermore, an object of this invention is to provide novel means for holding the keg in the support to prevent lateral movement or dislodgment of the keg from its support, novel means being furthermore provided for binding the upper edge of the keg at the rear to prevent tilting of the keg with respect to the holder when the holder is oscillated or tilted to cause the keg to discharge its contents.
A further object of this invention is to provide a keg holder and a frame therefor, whereby a plurality of kegs may be support ed subject to movement in the manner heretofore described, novel means being also provided for lifting the kegs with respect to the holders to facilitate the application of the kegs to the holders.
A still further object of thisinvention is to provide novel means for supporting scales or other weighing means in position to be moved relatively to the kegs so that the weighing device may be brought into position to receive the contents of any one of the kegs so that merchandise removed from the keg may be readily determined.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding p arts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of a barrel stand embodying the invention; Fig.
2 illustrates an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 illustrates a vertical sectional view of the stand shown in Fig. 1 with one of the receptacles tilted; Fig. at illustrates a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 illus trates a sectional view on the line 5 5 of F 2; Fig. 6 illustrates a detail view of a detent for controlling the scale track; Fig. 7 illustrates an enlarged detail view of the keg holder Fig. 8 illustrates a detail view of a fragment of one of the posts, and the cage support therefor; Fig. 9 illustrates an end view of the partssho'wn in Fig. 8; Fig. 9 illustpates a face view of the parts shown in Fig. 8; Fig. 9 illustrates a. front view of the holder shown in Fig. 7 with the flexible retaining device in operation position; Fig. 9 illustrates an enlarged detail view of the adjustable fastening for the flexible retain ing member.
In these drawings the frame is shown as comprising a series of posts or uprights 1O havingthe means for supporting kegs in tiers or horizontal rows, each of the said uprights having a plate 11 for each keg support, which plate carries a pintle 12. Each of the keg cages or holders consists of a framelike structure 13 opened at one side to permit the application and removal of kegs, the said cage having hangers 15L at the sides thereof, which hangers are applied to the pintles 12 of the plates 11 and the said hangers are held on the pintles in any appropriate manner, as by nuts 15. Each cage has a rear metallic strap 16 terminating at its upper end in an extension 17 apertured as at 18 to receive the end 19 of a clip 20, which clip has an end which embraces the upper edge of the keg and said clip has an aperture 21 threaded to receive a shank 22 of the handle 23. The shank 22 is designed to be forced into engagement with the upper edge of the barrel for retaining the clip in place and the handle of the shank may be manipulated to oscillate the keg or to shake it to dislodge the contents thereof.
It will be seen froman inspection of the drawing that the clip swings on the exten sion 17 out of engagement with the upper edge of the keg and it may be readily applied to the upper end edge of a keg and clamped in place by manipulation of the handle on the threaded shank. The frame has bands 24: which partially encircle the keg and the end of each band is provided with a loop 25 to receive the end of a flexible connection 26 which, intermediate its length, is provided with a lever 27 for increasing or diminishing the length of the said flexible connection so that it may be caused to bind the keg and effectually retain it in the frame and prevent its dislodgment therefrom.
As seen in the drawing, there are a plurality of keg holding members associated with the post and by use of the invention, kegs of nails or other commodity may be stored in a salesroom in position to occupy little floor space as compared with methods now commonly employed Where the kegs are allowed to remain on the floor.
As a means for elevating or hoisting the kegs in a position to place them in the frames, the upper ends of the posts support a track 28 on which a small truck 29 travels, the said truck carrying a pulley 30 having a flexible connection 31 which may be used as stated for hoisting the kegs. The flexible connection may have suitable keg grips or engaging devices such as 32 to facilitate the application of the flexible connection to the keg and the operation of the same for hoisting the kegs.
The means for supporting the scales consists of a. track or rod 34 on which a wheel 35 is run, the said scales being connected to the wheel so that it will be carried to different positions with relation to the kegs, and means are provided for moving the track 34 into alinement with the kegs of the different tiers or rows, and to that end, the track 34: has pinions 36 which mesh with a rack 37 supported in any suitable manner by the end posts, the said track being further provided with a sprocket wheel 38 engaged by a sprocket chain 39 which serves to rotate the track 34 and the pinions 36 which are secured thereto. Thus the pinions travel up or down the racks and elevate or lower the track 34 according to the stated.
I claim- 1. In a keg holder, a plurality of posts, plates secured thereto, said plates having pintles, a keg support consisting of a cage having an open side, hangers secured to the cage and oscillatingly supported from the pintles, a clip hinged to a portion of the frame and adapted to overlie the upper edge of the keg, a shank threaded through the clip and adapted to bear against the upper edge of the cage, and a handle on the said shank.
2. In a keg holder, a plurality of posts, plates secured to said posts, said plates havingtrunnions, keg holders consisting of cages having open sides, hangers secured to the cages, said hangers being ,supported from the pintles, bands on the keg holders terminating in loops, flexible connections partially embracing the kegs and connected to the loops of the bands for retaining the kegs in place, a clip hinged to the cage and adapted to overlie the edge of the keg, and a screw threaded through the clip and adapted to bear on the keg for retaining it in position.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
RANDOLPH L. WRIGHT.
