UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-

BEER-PLATE.
EiPECIFlCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,140, dated November '7, 1893. Application filed August 11, 1893. Serial No. 482,911- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL KOCH, of Hoboken,
Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Beer-Plate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved plate of the kind used to support'beer glasses, mugs and similar articles.
The object of the invention is to so construct the plate that it is light, durable and will readily absorb the moisture from the glass and also from the table.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plate showing it partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the'same.
My improved beer plate is composed of two parts, a fiat annular plate proper and an absorbent pad which is supported thereby. The annular plate a, is composed of sheet metal or other material and is provided at its outer edge with an upwardly projecting rim orbead a, and at its inner edge with a shorter upwardly projecting flange a The body of the plate is made open work or perforated as at a The absorbent pad b, is composed preferably of compressed wood pulp and is of a size tofit within the bead a. The pad b, is of circular form and is provided with a circular "roove b in its lower face to receive flange a In use, the pad I), is placed upon the plate a, so as to cover the entire plate within head a, and also the circular central opening of the plate. The flange 0?, will hold the pad properly in place and prevent it from slipping, though, of course, the pad may be readily renewed. Owing to the open work character of the plate and also to its annular form, the pad will absorb the moisture from thetable as well as that from the glass.
What I claim is The combination of a fiat open-work base plate having an outer flange with an absorbent pad that extends over the body of such plate and up to the flange, substantially as specified.
EMIL KOCH.
