To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER PLAWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Coolers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to beer or liquid coolers; and its object is to provide a cheap and simple portable device of this character which can be conveniently carried by hand from place to place, so that it will be especially adapted for use on picnics and other outings when it is desired to have a barrel or keg of beer or other liquid and where no provision can be made for placing the barrel or keg directly on ice.

The invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts which 1 shall hereinafter'fully describe and claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved beer-cooler attached to a keg'of beer and showing my improved means for compressing air in the keg by means of an ordinary bicycletire-inflating pump. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the ice-box and cooling-coil. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof with the lid of the ice-box turned back on its hinges. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, with part broken away, of the bung-plug, through which air is admitted and compressed in the keg.

In its general arrangementmy improved beer-cooler comprises a fiat spiral coolingtube a, made of suitable metal coiled in a horizontal plane to form a seat for a lump of ice. One end of the tubing extends in aborizontal plane outwardly from the innermost convolution of the coil, underneath the same, as shown at b, is curved upwardly on the outside of the coil, as shown at b, and thence extends again in a horizontal plane b and is turned upwardly at its extremity b where it is attached to the beer-faucet d, inserted in one head of the keg e, as indicated in Fig. 1. The other end of the tubing extends upwardly and outwardly, as at f, from the outermost "convolution of the coil and is provided with a dispensing-faucet g.

The ice-box A of my device is made in two preferably equal circular sections it and it,

one above the other and hinged together at one side, as shown at i. The lower section h forms the bottom of the said box, in which the ice-seat or cooling-coil a is placed, and the upper section h forms the lid of the box, the two sections being provided with semicircular recesses j, which register when the lid is closed upon the bottom and. through which the horizontal ends of the coil-tubing extend. These recesses j are lined with rubber or other packing j, which fits tightly around the ends of the tubing and prevents warm air from entering the ice-box at such points. The lower section of the ice-box is provided at its side with a drain-cock it, through which the drippings of the ice may be drawn off, and the upper section of the box is provided on its side with a catch Z, which engages a keeper m on .the lower section whereby to fasten the two hinged sections together.

In order that the ice-box and coil may be conveniently carried from place to place by hand, I have provided two loop-handles n, one secured to each section of the box at the side thereof and near the adjoining edges, so

that the two handles may be grasped by one neck beyond said'plug, and an ordinary bicycle-tire-infiating pump 5 is suitably fastened to said neck. When it is desired to force airinto the keg,the stop-cock r is opened and the pump 8 manipulated until sufficient air-pressure is obtained in the keg, when the stop-cock is closed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A portable liquid or beer cooler, comprising a flat spiral cooling-tube of metal, one end of said tube extending from the innermost convolution of the coil outwardly underneath the latter and curving upwardly and then projecting outwardly on the outside of the coil,
