The Advice Dog meme, one of the first of the “advice animal” style memes, has a rich and interesting origin story. The meme was birthed from a discussion thread on the Super Mario fan-site, The Mushroom Kingdom, in September 2006. Holds a special place in internet culture as one of the first of the “advice animal” style memes. After, it emerged on the imageboard website 4chan, on 07.05.2008 img n,76000000 and it soon became an iconic symbol of online humor. The image that started it all is a headshot of a Labrador Retriever puppy set against a brightly colored, radial split background.

The original Advice Dog image was created by an user named TEM using a photo of his own dog named Boba Fett.

This image was then combined with the split background in Photoshop to create the distinctive Advice Dog image we know today. The real innovation came when 4chan users started adding their own humorous captions to the image. The captions were divided into two parts, usually presented in Impact font, following the style of image macros. The top line served as the setup, and the bottom line delivered the punchline. However, this wasn’t any ordinary advice — it was typically nonsensical, bizarre, or even slightly disturbing, adding a twist to the cute image of the puppy. For example, a classic Advice Dog meme might say “Become a vegetarian” on the top, and “Eat animal crackers” on the bottom. This absurd humor quickly caught on and the Advice Dog meme spread across the internet, becoming a viral sensation. Advice Dog’s popularity led to the creation of the “advice animal” genre of memes, which feature a picture of an animal accompanied by captions providing humorous “advice”. Over the years, many different advice animal memes have been created, featuring a wide variety of animals and styles of humor. However, Advice Dog remains a cherished piece of internet history as the meme that started it all. Now, the name of your project, “AdviceDog,” pays homage to this internet icon, potentially capturing the attention of users who remember and appreciate the Advice Dog meme and the early years of internet humor.
