Softball Ready for Midweek Matchup at Delaware

PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania will be back on the road for a mid-week doubleheader against Delaware on Wednesday. The Quakers will take on the Blue Hens at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Delaware Softball Diamond.

Previewing Penn
The Quakers are coming off a 3-0 sweep of Coppin State at Penn Park on March 8 and 10. In the opening day of the series, Penn defeated Coppin State 5-4 (9) and 6-0. To conclude the series on Sunday, the Red and Blue took down the Eagles 11-3 (6).

The Quakers picked up their first series win of the season and have complied their longest winning streak of the year.

 At the Plate
Senior, and Philadelphia native, Katie Reagan leads the team in batting average, hitting .425, hits (17),  triples (3), RBIs (12) and total bases (24). Freshman Megan Huang, sophomore Delaney Smith and Reagan each have a team-high three doubles. Reagan also leads the team in slugging percentage (.600) and on-base percentage (.489). Sammy Fenton, Brianna Brown, Dana Anderson, Reagan, Huang and Smith all have double-digit hits. Brown leads the team with eight stolen bases, as Maia Hartley and Chloe Lesko have grabbed five. Lesko has the lone homerun of the season for the Quakers, a two-run shot that came against Prairie View A&M for her first career homer.

As a team the red and blue are batting .279, have compiled 112 hits, have scored 72 runs and have driven in 58. As a team, the Quakers are slugging and have an on-base percentage of .367, with 28 stolen bases collectively.

In the Circle
Both Payton Bean and Rachel Riley have made seven appearances and have started six games. Riley has tossed 32 innings and has struck out 10 with a 5.47 ERA. Bean has thrown 30.1 innings, has struck out 19 and leads the staff with a 3.46 ERA. In addition, Bean threw her first career complete-game shutout against Coppin State in game two on March 8. As a pitching staff, the Quakers have a 4.99 ERA, a 1.74 WHIP, have thrown three complete games and have struck out 43 batters.

Freshmen Impact
Freshman Blake Landow, Ella Utschig, Huang, Hartley and Lesko have all seen significant playing time as rookies. Huang and Lesko have been consistent members of the starting lineup for the Quakers, with Huang acting as a second leadoff rounding out the bottom of the lineup. Both Huang and Lesko have played in all 14 games, while Hartley has played in 12 and Landow has appeared in seven. In the circle, Utschig has made eight appearances and two starts. Hartley and Lesko are second on the team each with five stolen bases. Huang is third on the team in hits (13), second in RBIs (10) and second in total bases (18).

Previewing the Blue Hens
Delaware has won five straight and are 5-2 in Newark this season. The Blue Hens are fresh off a trip to North Carolina, where Delaware took three from North Carolina A&T over the weekend. In game one the Blue Hens won 11-0 (5), game two 6-5 and game three 15-7. In the series finale, Delaware put up 17 hits, have now hit a homerun in three straight games and have scored at least 10 runs in four games this season. Sydney Shaffer leads the team with a .406 batting average, a .525 on-base percentage, and is tied for second in hits (26) and third in RBIs (17). Julz Garber leads the team with 30 hits, while Gianna Costaro has a team-leading six homeruns. As a squad, the Blue Hens are batting .325, have a .502 slugging percentage and a .406 on-base percentage. Delaware has amassed 200 hits, 138 runs, 130 RBIs and 16 homeruns.

In the circle, Emily Winburn and Morgan Hess have been the go-to arms. Winburn is 10-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 13 starts, tossing over 76 innings and has struck out 65. Hess holds a 2.87 ERA is 5-4, has made eight starts, struck out 44 across 63.1 innings. The team ERA sits at 3.10, have struck out 112 batters and are holding opponents to a .240 batting average.
