No. 3/2 Softball preview: at No. 17/18 Florida State

Texas set to play Florida State in Tallahassee for the first time since 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – En route to its three-game Big 12 Conference series in Orlando against UCF this upcoming weekend, The University of Texas softball program will make a mid-week pit stop in Tallahassee to play No. 17/18 Florida State at Seminole Softball Complex. 

Mark Neely and Michele Smith will call the game's action on the ACC Network, while Andrew Haynes will have the Texas radio broadcast on https://texas.leanplayer.com/.

LEADING OFF

  • Wednesday night's game on Joanne Graf Field at Seminole Softball Complex will mark the first for the Texas Longhorn softball program since March 3, 2002, when the Seminoles earned a 1-0 victory. 
    • Since that game, the two programs have gone on to play a softball game in Fullerton, Calif., Columbus, Ga., Austin, Texas and Clearwater, Fla. 
    • The 2002 contest between Texas and Florida State remains the only softball game to be played in Tallahassee, Fla. 
      • The 2002 Longhorns went on to earn a Big 12 Conference championship with a 17-1 conference mark that highlighted a 50-13 overall record and a 16th final ranking. 
  • With Texas' non-conference game at Florida State on Wednesday, March 20, it'll mark the third consecutive year that the Longhorns have made multiple trips within the same season to the state of Florida for a non-conference game. 
  • Wednesday evening's contest will mark the fourth true road game against a top-25 team this season.
    • Friday, Feb. 9 at then-No.10/8 UCLA (3-2, W)
    • Saturday, Feb. 10 at then-No.10/8 UCLA (16-0, W)
    • Tuesday, March 12 at then-No.2/2 LSU (7-4, L)
    • Wednesday, March 20 at then-No. 17/18 (TBD)
      • The Longhorns are scheduled for a three-game series at No. 4/6 Oklahoma State next weekend with a single game at No. 22/19 on Friday, April 12 as well. 
      • During its run to the 2022 Women's College World Series, Texas faced 10 top-25 opponents in a true road game. 
  • Mac Morgan will enter Wednesday night's game having retired 29 of the last 31 batters she's faced over her last 9.1 innings of work dating back to last Tuesday's road contest in Baton Rouge at then-No. 2 LSU. 
  • With a win over Florida State on Wednesday, Texas would move to 25-3 on the season, tying the best start by the Longhorns under sixth-year head coach Mike White
    • 2024 – 24-3
    • 2023 – 23-4-1
    • 2022 – 18-9-1
    • 2021 – 25-3
    • 2020 – 24-3
      • Season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic before the Longhorns could play a 28th game on the season. 
    • 2019 – 23-5 
  • Reese Atwood will enter Wednesday night's game just four RBI shy of recording just the eighth 50-RBI season in the program's history. 
    • Viviana Martinez was the last to surpass the 50-RBI mark when the Arizona native drove in a freshman-record 52 runs throughout the 2023 season. 
    • Lindsey Stephens (2014) and Taylor Thom (2013) are tied atop the program's single-season RBI list with 66.
