NGC 346

#1

Post by Stuart »

Hi all,

This is NGC 346, an open cluster and associated nebula in the Small Magellanic Cloud taken from Chile by SSRO at CTIO. This is about 210,000 light-years from Earth.

There was a lot of different ways to play with this as there was narrowband (Ha and O3) as well as broadband RGB data and I tried many different techniques. I finally decided to concentrate on the narrowband data as I liked the splash of nebula color. This is HOO palate with RGB star replacement. Processed in PixInsight. The color of the nebula isn't "true" color as it is color mapped narrowband data, it's not too far from off.

Personal equipment: TEC 140 F7 on Astro-Physics Mach 1 mount. Camera QSI 683ws7. Guide with Vario guiding scope
Shared equipment through Star Shadows Remote Observatory through PROMPT/ CTIO/Chile 16" RCOS 16803 chip
Shared equipment through San Diego Astronomy Society 14" RC with 16803 chip on a paramount
Software (for my stuff) PemPRO, SGP, PHD, Focus Boss, ASCOM, and Pixinsight on the other end.

Wow, Stuart, that's a beautiful image and I don't recall seeing it before. Great pick for a target.

Thanks. I didn't pick the target--it was taken in Chile and I processed the data. But it's an SMC target if you're in Africa you should be able to pick off.

Image looks great Stuart. I like the processing approach with the HOO and RGB stars.

Thanks. I also did a process using the NBRGB script, and although the stars were better in that one, I liked the nebula better in this.
