Sheriff’s Office warns of bogus parking ticket scam

Parking tickets that have recently been left on vehicles around town are fake, and an attempt to scam community members out of money, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office says these parking tickets are fake. Image provided.

This week’s statement from the Sheriff’s Office says “the tickets order you to send payment to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office but give the wrong address to our office.” The correct address is 779 Warren Road, they say. The bogus tickets also use a badge number format that doesn’t match Sheriff’s Office badge numbers.

A provided image of the fake ticket shows the words “Tompkins County” and “Ithaca, NY” have been added to the ticket with lettering that doesn’t match the original document used as the basis for the parking ticket.

The Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who has received one of these tickets and sent in a payment to contact them at 607-257-1345.
