The Ford Transit SuperVan 4 has been upgraded in a bid to produce a record-breaking run at the world-famous Pikes Peak Hill Climb on June 25.
Renamed the Ford Transit SuperVan 4.2, the unlikely all-electric racing van features a complete overhaul of its already wild aero.
In comes a larger double-element rear spoiler, more imposing side skirts and a more prominent front splitter to generate up to 1996kg of downforce at the van’s 240km/h top speed.
Other changes introduced by Ford Performance includes, curiously, winding power back by deleting one of the four electric motors.
The three-motor set-up produces 1050kW, down from 1490kW previously, but the simpler powertrain provides a better weight distribution while still ensuring all-wheel drive, according to Ford.
Weight-saving measures have taken priority in the SuperVan 4.2’s gestation, with other new elements including carbon-ceramic brakes, forged magnesium alloy wheels, upgraded drive shafts and a Perspex front screen.
In charge of the driving duties is French race ace Romain Dumas, who has won Pikes Peaks four times and also has a win at the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race under his belt (2010).
Ford has been careful not to confirm it is aiming for an outright win at the world-famous hill climb.
Already spotted testing both on public roads and at the Nurburgring, Ford Performance appears to be developing a high-performance production version of the SuperVan 4 that could be based on either the Ford E-Transit or E-Transit Custom commercial vans.
The Blue Oval has also previously trademarked the ‘Ford SuperVan’ nameplate with IP Australia.
