The full page illustration shows the beacon house barracks , the Praam boat named the Smeaton, workmen in the foundation construction pit and a cut-away view of the attending boat. It was built between 1807 and 1810 by Robert Stevenson on Bell Rock (aka Inchscape). A pramm, pram or pramm boat is a shallow-draught flat-bottomed vessel, usually propelled by pushing it through the water using a long pole (like a punt).

The camel has sixteen pumps in two rows, two capstanes and two beting, a tap beam at the bow, and four high-speed decks, served with auger-like top deck keys, to let the camel run full. In the middle is a piece of a mast set, against the two rear and stirring straight, but only one broad stir has been preserved.
